Ongoing Service Opportunities

 

• Hospitality

Be a part of Westminster’s welcoming presence for members and visitors. Serve on Sunday mornings before during and after worship in the following areas:

                        Greeters – contact Dan Franklin

                        Coffee Servers – contact Dan Franklin

                        Ushers, 10:30 service – contact Dan Franklin

                        Red Rovers – contact John Williamson

 

Memorial Receptions:  Monthly supervisors and volunteers needed to serve coffee and cake during memorial receptions as needed on weekdays and weekends. Contact Priscilla Northenscold.

 

Silver Service Receptions:  Coordinator needed to plan, set up and supervise volunteers during occasional silver service receptions on Sundays after the 10:30 worship service. Contact Priscilla Northenscold. Although the receptions themselves are occasional, the need for a coordinator is an on-going commitment.

 

• Faith In Action

 

Advocacy Team: 1 position
A team member to attend monthly meetings of the interfaith group Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness (DCEH) and report back to the Advocacy team. Contact
Dan Franklin.

 

Families in Transition: Act as a mentor to a family selected by Episcopal Community Services, meeting as needed to listen and offer support as the family works to better their situation.  Each family is on a 6-month contract with an option to renew.  Attend monthly meetings of the Families in Transition team. Contact Barb Person.

 

Environment/Sustainability Committee:  Attend occasional meetings and engage in activities designed to educate and inspire the congregation to reduce their “footprint”. Activities include helping to plan the annual Bike To Church Sunday, organize a carpool system for officers and others attending events at WPC, write grant proposals to secure money used to fund committee events and plan ways for WPC to participate in community-wide initiatives. Social service Sewing:  Participate in the oldest Faith In Action group at Westminster – still going strong after more than 100 years!  Craft prayer shawls, blankets and other items Wednesday mornings from 9 – 11 and occasional Saturdays, or you can work from home. Contact Dan Franklin.

 

• Fellowship

WestConnection:  2 Coordinators are needed to plan and organize events for Westminster members in their 20s and 30s. Contact Melanie McCall.


• Children Youth & Families

 

CYF Council: Participate in monthly meetings helping to develop new ideas for activities in this area of ministry. Help plan, organize and publicize events. Contact Meghan Gage-Finn.

 

Nursery Volunteer:  Assist in the care of infants and toddlers on Sunday mornings before and during worship. Contact Marie Kruskop.

 

• Pastoral Care

 

 

 

Short-Term Service Opportunities

 

• Adult Education/Leadership Development

 Shepherd for Officer Training Phase I:  Weekly commitment from November through April.  Mentor new officers as they move through the training process.  Assist with the logistics of the training – passing out papers, answering questions and other tasks.  Contact Kathy Michael.

 

Covenant Group Facilitator:  Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings during Lent.  Lead discussions of each week’s lectionary text while encouraging group participation in a thought-provoking and caring environment.  Contact Kathy Michael.

 

• Children Youth & Families

 

Confirmation Mentors:  Guide and support confirmands during the confirmation process.  Meet with the youth occasionally during the year they spend studying faith and preparing to become members of the church.  There are approximately 20 students in this year’s class.  Contact Meghan Gage-Finn.

 

Retreat and Mission Trip Adult Leaders:  Overnight travel, mostly in Minnesota, accompanying Westminster’s young people as they explore their faith and participate in service projects.  Weekends and occasional week-long trips throughout the calendar year.  Contact Meghan Gage-Finn.

FEAST:  Help serve a meal to the homeless and disadvantaged on the 4th Sunday of the month.  Volunteers report to the refectory at 4 pm for set-up and clean-up is usually complete by 7 pm.  Sign up at the reception desk or contact Dan Franklin.

 

Habitat for HumanityJoin Westminster’s team and help build or rehabilitate low-income housing in the Twin Cities area. Westminster joins with many faith communities to build houses on Minneapolis’ near North side and elsewhere in the region.  Watch for announcements or contact Dan Franklin

 

Paint-A-Thon:  Paint a home on the first Saturday of August for a low income senior selected by the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches.  An optional prep day takes place the week before.  Watch for announcements or contact Dan Franklin.

 

Email notification:  Sign up to receive weekly Faith In Action emails or occasional Advocacy emails.  Stay informed of Westminster’s mission activities.  Contact Dan Franklin and indicate which email group you would like to join.

 

• Fellowship

 

Email notification:  Sign up to receive bi-weekly emails about Fellowship events.  Contact Dan Franklin.

 

Roseville Presbyterian Homes:  Organize and participate in a worship service held at the facility one Sunday every other month.  Assist residents who wish to attend the service.  Contact David Liddle.

 

 

One-Time/Occasional Service Opportunities

 

Leadership Development Team:  Plan and organize the officer training program.  Meets as needed.  Contact Kathy Michael.

 

Member to Member Care team:  Visit homebound members and those in hospital according to a schedule developed by the Pastoral Care Council. Contact David Liddle.

 

Church School Teacher:  Participate in the education of Westminster’s young people on Sunday mornings during the program year. Work in a nurturing, team environment using an established curriculum. Contact Mary Alette Davis.
