Ancient Texts for New Times: Foundations of our Faith in the Older Testament

Education for adults at Westminster bridges our faith tradition with real life. Seminary and college professors provide outstanding teaching. Small group studies offer time to dig deeper and get to know others better. Movie of the Month draws on documentaries and feature films to explore the year’s theme. The January All-Church Book Read engages the whole congregation in reading a novel together and meeting for book discussions. Traveling Seminars provide an experience for learning, community, and spiritual pilgrimage to grow in faith as well as in knowledge. Click here for the 2010-2011 Education for Faith & Life catalog.

The Older Testament and the New Faith: From Paul to Marcion
Christianity emerged out of Judaism and the church’s original Bible was simply the scriptures
of the synagogue. Nonetheless, innovations in the new faith (e.g., its claim for a
crucified messiah, its admission of non-Jews into the church apart from requiring that
they observe the Mosaic law) raised significant questions about the continuity of the
church with Israel.
Dr. Paul Capetz from United Theological Seminary will look at the Older Testament through the lens of historical theology.

Why Christians Should Stop Reading the OLD Testament
Christians continue to read and study the Old Testament as an essential introduction to
the New Testament, and together they comprise the Holy Scriptures. The Old Testament
is not a Christian text, but the still dynamic Hebrew Bible, TaNaKh of the Jewish community.
Rabbi Joseph Edelheit will discuss the rationale for Christians studying the Hebrew Scriptures.
