About Worship at Westminster

8:30am Sunday Service in the Chapel (program year)
This 40-minute service in the chapel offers organ prelude and postlude, opening and closing hymns, scripture, sermon, prayer, and special music by soloists or the choir. Some families find this service to be better suited to a younger child’s attention span. Often quieter and more contemplative, this service offers a sense of intimacy found in a smaller congregation.
9:45am Sunday Communion Service (program year)
This brief service of communion and prayer is held in the chapel and led by Presbyterian ministers associated with Westminster. There is NO 9:45am communion service on the first Sunday of the month during the program year when communion is served during regular worship services.
10:30am Sunday Worship Service (program year)
The 10:30am traditional service in the sanctuary is the largest weekly gathering of Westminster and makes clear the central fact of Westminster’s life: the living God made known in the person of Jesus Christ. Dignity, joy, warmth and beauty are its hallmarks, steeped in a rich Westminster tradition that engages the heart and mind through scripture and sermon, prayer, the best in organ and choral sacred music and profound silence. We celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of the month.
Summer Sunday Worship Schedule (Memorial Day through Labor Day)
9:00am: brief service of communion and prayer every Sunday is held in the chapel and led by Presbyterian ministers associated with Westminster.
10:00am: traditional worship service in the Sanctuary.
Summer Wednesdays Evenings (June and July)
6:15pm: casual, family-friendly worship service in the Great Hall, followed by a cook-out in the courtyard.
Communion
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper sustains and nourishes the faith community in the baptismal journey. We practice an open communion. All baptized believers are welcome at the table. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month at both services, and every Sunday at the 9:45am Chapel service except the first Sunday of the month during the program year.
Celtic Worship Service
A contemplative Celtic worship service is held the second Thursday of each month in the Westminster Chapel at 7:00pm. The service is designed to return us to the central Celtic celebration of the Gospel message that worship is all that we are and all that we do. In our search for wholeness, our work and our worship are one. Music of the Celtic harp and other traditional instruments underscore a worship that comes from the heart of who we are and whose we are.
Quiet Worship Service
A quiet worship service is held the fourth Saturday of each month at 9:00am in Westminster's Chapel. Many who are deeply committed to a life of service have found that their journey out into the business of the world is enriched and strengthened when they take time for the journey in, for prayer or quiet music or silence. Many have also found that contemplative worship must be experienced to be known. Consider beginning your weekend by intentionally taking time for yourself, time for quiet worship, for sung prayers and scripture and deep silence in a special setting. View past Quiet Worship services.
Lenten Worship Services
Beginning on Ash Wednesday and for the following five Wednesdays in Lent there are two worship services: Noon in the Chapel followed by a simple lunch in the Meisel Room, and a Taize service at 6:30pm in the Great Hall.
Maundy Thursday Services are at noon in the chapel and7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.
